Border Stories is an ongoing multimedia project dedicated to documenting life along the U.S.-Mexico border.
Full version available here. These are just some lines that caught my eye while reading the play. “A Woman of No Importance” is a play that highlights the haughty culture of aristocrats in the late 1800s and sheds light on some of the ridiculousness of old English social formalities, such as titles, stature, and family background. Oscar Wilde is one of my favorite writers. His language is crimson with life and wit.
——
LADY STUTFIELD: And what have you been writing about this morning, Mr. Kelvil?
KELVIL: On the usual subject, Lady Stutfield. On Purity.
———-
LADY CAROLINE: You believe good of every one, Jane. It is a great fault.
————
LADY STUTFIELD: But there is so much unkind scandal in modern life.
———
MRS. ALLONBY: Curious thing, plain women are always jealous of their husbands, beautiful women never are.
————
MRS. ALLONBY: Is she such a mystery?
LORD ILLINGWORTH: She is more than a mystery!–– she is a mood.
MRS. ALLONBY: Moods don’t last.
LORD ILLINGWORTH: It is their chief charm.
———
LORD ILLINGWORTH: I never intend to grow old. The soul is born old but grows young. That is the comedy of life.
MRS. ALLONBY: And the body is born young and grows old. That is life’s tragedy.
———
MRS. ALLONBY : Men always want to be a woman’s first love. That is their clumsy vanity. We women have a more subtle instinct about things. What we like is to be a man’s last romance.
breathing a sigh of relief
we settle into our spot
taking turns glancing around
our muscles relax, hearts beat fast
your hand fits tight
i’ll miss your palms
far below the city sleeps
mist dims the view
but I’m glad we’re here
words flow effortlessly
your smile enchants me
together, patiently we wait
for the fog to clear
for time to slow down
the cool air clings to us
while i hold on to you
i’m comforted by your cheek
upon my chest, against my neck
i want to thank you
for being so strong
so confident and selfless
as we turn to kiss
the warm wind curries favor
lifting the haze, and
exposing our perch
hovering lights twinkle
i can see the dock
i grasp for it, trying to
hold on to moments past
memories roll like film
i etch them in my mind
so they last forever
just us- two lovers
in a vacant lot, 2:00am
our cliff, a balcony
my partner, a Queen
i’ll come back to you
my love
Or you may miss it,
that sudden blinding light
of attraction that slips
unknowingly into your iris
as she lets her lips twist
slightly upwards when your hands
accidentally collide for the first time.Everything is but a thread
of moments intertwining
rapidly.Don’t blink or you could lose
that small whisper of a second
the static hopping off fingertips
as you hand her a drink
smiling at her in a brief moment
that could alter your years.
